Why I hate typical photography advice 🤦‍♀️

For the last few weeks I've been really working on identifying when things are uncomfortable or difficult, deciding what I want to do about them, and then actually taking the action needed. I'll be the first to admit I LOVE procrastination 😂 so action is a muscle I HAVE to continue building.

Which reminds me of how most photographers encourage their people book a photo session...

Just schedule the session, its so easy, just do it.

To me, this is too basic, it ignores all the underlying fears or insecurities around why someone wouldn't "just do it."

And after working with so many people who this is their first time being professionally photographed or have been putting off the session for years OR don't feel skinny enough or pretty enough - I have a few things to say.

#1 You've never going to feel completely ready for the big, scary step. You'll always feel a rush and thats ok.

#2 Start small. I'm not going to tell you to just do it. Nope. But what I am going to say is start building your wins, step by step, and each time you win you gain confidence. Each time you lose, you learn something. Don't get derailed. If you're working to build confidence that could be anything small that is just for you and feels a little "selfish" or "spoiled".

#3 Speak positivity over yourself. I am alll about radical accountability and truth telling, we don't want to lie to ourselves or others just to avoid difficult truths. BUT we also have to remember that we are all learning to be better. Words have power. Check out this video about positive vs negative words spoken over plants and the results. Part of photography is showing people their beauty and connections from a different perspective and this is a huge benefit for people.

I want to encourage you to start small. Try more self love and positivity and how it impacts your life and changes your perspective.

You can do this. I believe in you!
